Race Preparation: Organizers Working Hard on Hintonburg’s 5k Event.
By Jeff Leiper.
Planning for the fifth annual Hintonburg Centennial 5k is well underway and race organizers have several changes in store for participants. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, July 17. The Hintonburg Community Association and neighbourhood bike shop Cyclelogik have teamed up to undertake this year’s event. Cyclelogik’s title sponsorship means that, for the first time, the race will be chip-timed to give runners and walkers an official time. It’s hoped the addition of chip-timing will broaden the events appeal even further-afield in Canada and the US. For several years, people have been coming from further away for the Centennial, with a strong contingent coming from everywhere from Montreal to Toronto, and more and more from Northern Ontario.
For the second year, the race will also offer free high-resolution photo downloads as part of the $20 (plus $3 admin fee) registration.
The Newswest 1k Kids Run will also be run this year for the fifth time, again with free registration.
The most important task facing organizers now is to corral nearly 50 race course marshals to help ensure the safety of participants on the course. The HCA hopes people will be as generous with their time as in past. The course marshal job is an easy one. Intersections are pre-assigned and organizers ask volunteers to supervise for an hour and a half the morning of the event. This is especially important for the section of the route over which the kids run. If you can volunteer between 8:30 to 10 am on July 17, please contact Jeff Leiper at email@example.com . No experience is necessary.
One change this year that participants will want to take note of is that, due to the logistics of chip-timing for the 5k race, there will be no race day registration – only kit pick-up. Further, to help manage the logistics, in-person registration the day before the race will cost more. It’s hoped most participants will take advantage of the opportunity to register online at http://hintonburg.com .
