Getting to know you….

By Cst Dawn Neilly, OPS.

The only contact the vast majority of Ottawans have with the police is seeing an officer drive by in a cruiser or ride by on a bike. That’s good. We don’t want you to have to need us. But we do want you to know that we’re here when you do need us.

Most Ottawa Police Service officers have specific jobs to do or certain specialties that keep them pretty busy, whether it’s responding to calls or following up on crimes that have already been committed. They stay pretty much behind the scenes until an incident occurs that requires their presence.

I have a specific job to do as a Community Police Officer but it’s one that takes me into the heart of a particular community, perhaps to deal with isolated incidents, but also to get to know the people who live in “my” neighbourhoods. This job is my opportunity to make you aware of a police presence that you can call on to discuss problems or issues that you have come across in your area. I can let you know what the police can do to help you and your families stay safe.

You can take the initiative to come visit me at the community police centre in the Hintonburg Community Centre or you can attend community meetings that are held from time to time to address specific concerns, or you can find me at any number of community events, such as the spring and fall events at Parkdale Park or the special activity days at various City parks in the summertime.

One way to keep up with what we do or are planning to do, is to sign up to receive the Neighbourhood Watch Bulletin. Just send an email to that effect to wellingtoncpc@gmail.com . If you want to contact me directly, I’m at 613-236-1222, ext. 5871, or neillyd@ottawapolice.ca .

If I haven’t met you yet, I’d be happy to get to know you.
