Keep your holidays jolly.

“Smash and grab” is easy to say, easy to do and easy to avoid.

I continue to get reports of “smash and grabs”, i.e. thefts from vehicles, from many of the neighbourhoods covered by Newswest.

You might live in an otherwise safe area but vehicles represent easy pickings no matter where they are. Sometimes doors are left unlocked, a gift to the would-be thief. Sometimes they’re locked but there are tempting items clearly visible for the taking and worth the noise of the smashing window.

These thefts can be expensive and aggravating and turn a great day sour in a real hurry.
Do yourself a favour and take a few extra minutes to;

  • put the valuables out of sight (yes, this means the GPS),
  • lock all the doors,
  • use the garage if you have one,
  • or try to leave the vehicle in a well-lit area.

This is especially important to remember at this time of the year when shopping becomes everyone’s top priority. Keep your trunk free for storing packages, especially if you’re doing your shopping in stages. Use the trunk. A few minutes spent stowing stuff safely away is worth the hours down the road dealing with a break-in.

Just to be sure the would-be thief gets the message that your vehicle isn’t worth the effort, it wouldn’t hurt to put an “All Valuables Removed” card in the window. They are available from me at the Wellington Community Police Centre at 1064 Wellington West (Hintonburg Community Centre) or, if you prefer, you can go to the https://ottawapolice.ca web site and print your own.
