Wasn’t that a Party?

By Lorrie Marlow, Mechanicsville Community Association.

The Carleton Tavern hosted a heck of a party on July 28th with the Mechanicsville Community Association and the Hintonburg Economic Development Committee! The chairs in the Tavern were full before the event started and everyone stayed all night! These local community groups together coordinated the Mechanicsville Fire Fundraiser as an event to raise funds for two families displaced by a fire at 59 Carruthers on July 6th. The fire next door caused significant smoke and water damage, holes were chopped into walls, roof and ceiling to search for fire and the electricity was cut for weeks which ruined any food items in fridges and freezers. The families, totalling 9 people, were displaced that evening with the clothes on their back. They were thankful to a gentleman named Lyle, in a motorized wheelchair, out for a very late night wander who spotted the fire and crawled out of his wheelchair and up the stairs to their home and woke them. The families are also thankful to a firefighter who, after the fire was extinguished, re-entered one of the homes to retrieve a beloved toy for the youngest child. A family member made a call to advise the Mechanicsville Community Association of the fire and the wheels were in motion to host this fundraiser.

Of course, the Carleton Tavern is the venue when anyone in our community needs help, Simon Saikeley started calling his generous beer sponsors, Kitchissippi and Beaus, for raffle prizes. Lucky Ron, friends of the families, immediately stepped up. Laughing Dan Baker and his band “The Misfit Toys” were in. Rogue Lemming were up to the plate. Deirdre Dooley and her father, Kevin Dooley, brought their Irish tunes. Andy Mason with 4 Way Street operated the sound all night and performed as well as Scott Towaij and Dave Muir! The music kept everyone in the Tavern all night on a school night!

Now the raffle prizes from local artists and businesses that were drawn all night also kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Paintings from Angela McGowan, Daniel Martelock, Mark Stephenson, Justyna Szluinska, Peter Purdy, Jeannette Tossounian, Andrea Stokes and Kelly Dodds were hot items. Kristian from Mint Hair donated a gift certificate. A gift basket of Arbonne products from Tamey McIntosh, a gift basket from Councillor Jeff Leiper, baskets of wine and gift certificates from Pub Italia and other businesses were prepared by Jan Anderson Westwell, a $300 gift certificate for window tinting from Goldwing Automotive was also popular. A huge thank you to these sponsors and to Simon Saikeley, Kim and Angela who were so happy to help and served us well.

This event wouldn’t have done so well without the volunteers who hustled raffle and 50/50 tickets in the Tavern all night. When the first crew tired out, the youth got up and took over the sales. Neighbors and friends were more than generous with buying tickets and giving donations. The final tally raised was $2650 and was split between both families. The funds will help but the feeling of a community coming together nearly brought the families to tears! This is what a community does when someone needs a little help. In these times, we all live paycheck to paycheck and one incident can set us on a downward spiral. We have to look out for one another, this is what a community does. Get involved in your local community association, sit on the Board, offer your talents on a regular basis or just get out and volunteer once in a while. You may need a little help from your neighbors someday. If anything, you will meet great people in your community and we throw a heck of a party!
