By Hintonburg Community Association, Security Committee.

Cycling safety, Pedestrian safety. These were the themes of an education/enforcement blitz on Wellington Street West during a very hot afternoon rush hour on August 11th.

Safer Roads Ottawa, at the request of the Security Committee of the Hintonburg Community Association, organized the event. They partnered with the HCA, Ottawa Police and the Wellington West Business Improvement Area to bring safety information to cyclists and pedestrians.

Information was provided on cycling safety – dooring, sharrows, taking the lane, the requirement for a working bell – free bells were available to those who had no working bell on their bicycles. Reflector tape for bicycles was also available, as well as a handy, tiny pouch to attach to a helmet to hold identification and important medical information.

Officers provided warnings to cyclists who were not following the rules of the road – those: with no working bell, going through red lights, riding on the sidewalk. Volunteers provided safety tips and the free handouts. Pedestrians and cyclists were provided with reflector wrist bands to make them more visible at night. Many people wear dark clothing at night and are hard to see, the reflectors give everyone a much better chance of keeping safe.

Wellington Street West was chosen as the first education blitz area because of the number of complaints from pedestrians of cyclists riding on the sidewalks. The location for the first effort was in front of the Hintonburg Community Centre and also in front of the seniors building across the street. This initiative will be repeated at other locations in the future.
