December 3, 2009: Newswest History Contest Has a Winner.
Newswest History Contest Has a Winner.
The Newswest board of directors enjoyed the recent enthusiastic response to last issue’s History Contest question. All responses had at least part of the answer correct. Faraday St. resident Shirley Clarkin’s answer was drawn and she will be receiving a gift certificate to our local Swiss Chalet.
Here is her answer: “This is a picture of the Laderoute farm facing Kirkwood at the corner of Carling and Kirkwood where the Hampton Park Shopping Centre is. Mr. Laderoute had a stall at the Parkdale Market and my husband remembers going with his mom to his farm to fill the car up with winter squash and other winter vegetables which would last all winter in the cellar storage.”
Contest organizer Gary Ludington adds, “The house was owned by J.B. Laderoute who was a market gardner. It was located at 691 Kirkwood Ave and according to the family he owned the land as far back as where the baseball diamonds are now located. Some of his property was sold to the Ontario government to enable the building of the Queensway. The train tracks were just to the right of the picture published in Newswest. The Swiss Chalet located in Hampton Park Plaza is approximately where the house was located.
Thanks for all of your responses!
